The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that Cross Canadian Ragweed has been booked to perform on the Frontier Stage Sunday, August 1st at 6:30p & 8:30p. Ragweed’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Let’s get this straight right off the bat, though it should be obvious to any and all who have been listening over the last decade or so: Cross Canadian Ragweed are a rock ’n roll band. “They may be the last great Southern rock band still stomping the boards,” says All Music Guide, while USA Today proclaims that “this ferociously rocking band is one of the better-kept secrets around.” But not a secret for much longer, as their seventh studio album, Happiness and All The Other Things, amply proves. And, yes, being from a small town in Oklahoma and two of them now residing in the Lone Star State (where they are kings of the thriving Red Dirt/Texas music scene), Cross Canadian Ragweed also qualify as country, and have even played The Grand Ole Opry. The band is comprised of singer, songwriter and lead guitarist Cody Canada, bassist Jeremy Plato, guitarist Grady Cross and drummer Randy Ragsdale. At the heart of Cross Canadian Ragweed is a spirit and sound that the Arizona Daily Star hails as “simple, driving rock — common-man’s poetry set to music.” And it works marvelously for the group. Cross explains, “We’ve been through the van days; we were in a van with a trailer for seven years, so you learn everyone’s buttons real quick. So once you get past all that, I think you’ve got it made. We’ve always been pretty tight. I think the music really keeps us together.” And as is evident from the musical unity and passion that brims throughout Happiness and All The Other Things, “We love doing what we do,” concludes Canada. "If you love doing what you do and you can feed your family, keep doing it” The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that Sheena Easton has been booked to perform on the Frontier Stage Saturday, July 31st at 6:30p & 8:30p. Easton’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Sheena Easton’s career has spanned the last 30 years, with early musical influences including Motown, Barbra Streisand, rock and 70’s soul. Her recording career has included Gold and Platinum albums in the United States, Europe and Asia. She has received two Grammys, and was the first artist to have top five records on five different Billboard charts. Easton rose to fame in the early 1980’s with pop hits “9 to 5” – known as “Morning Train” – “Sugar Walls” and “For Your Eyes Only”. Easton has also made frequent appearances in Las Vegas where she has been a major attraction for the last decade, and as a testament to her success, she was recently inducted into the Las Vegas Hall Of Fame. The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that Sunny Sweeney has been booked to perform on the Frontier Stage Thursday, July 29th at 6:30p & 8:30p. Sweeney’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Sunny Sweeney plays country music, plain and simple. Her debut album, Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame, features the songs “If I Could”, “Ten Years Pass” and “East Texas Pines”. The album isn’t one of those quiet, timid, little baby-steps records that slowly grows on you with hints of future potential. Rather, it explodes into the room with an ultra-confident, Texas- sized “HOWDY!” and demands your full attention – now. The first thing that grabs you is her voice – a big, bold and brassy instrument that brings to mind classic female country singers of the 60’s and 70’s. It’s a voice that all but screams Sunny’s adopted slogan: “Get your honky-tonk on! The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. The California Mid-State Fair is thrilled to announce that Christian music’s newest leading lady Francesca Battistelli is confirmed to perform two sets on the Frontier Stage. Scheduled for Sunday, July 25th at 6:30 PM & 8:30 PM, these performances will be free of charge with paid admission to the fair, presented in part by K-LIFE 89.3 FM. Grammy-nominated Battistelli was recently named “Female Vocalist of the Year” at the 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards. Her current single “Beautiful, Beautiful” continues to climb the charts following the success of its predecessors “Free To Be Me” and “It’s Your Life.” Battistelli’s songs have reached beyond radio with placements on Jon & Kate Plus 8, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, NBC’s The Biggest Loser, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, and several other television and movie outlets. A songwriter since the ripe old age of 15, Francesca put pen to paper and crafted heartfelt, personal reflections on life and faith for what’s now her major-label debut, My Paper Heart. Battistelli’s soulful pop-oriented music was inspired by everyone from the jazz greats to contemporaries like John Mayer, Sara Bareilles and Nichole Nordeman. Francesca’s enthusiasm for life and passion to bring hope to a hurting world fueled each track from My Paper Heart. Whether she’s talking about the funk-laden title track or the buoyant, accept-yourself-as-you-are-anthem “Free to Be Me,” Francesca bookends her commentary with “I really love this song. It’s so much fun to sing.” Francesca’s pervasive joy paired with her adventurous musicianship and relatable songwriting make My Paper Heart an impressive debut. The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that Morris Day & The Time has been booked to perform on the Frontier Stage Saturday, July 24th at 6:30p & 8:30p. Morris Day & The Time’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Morris Day burst onto the public scene with the group's self-titled album, The Time, which included "Get It Up," "Cool," and "Girl." The group went on to record three more albums, including What Time Is It?, featuring the hits "777-9311," "Wild and Loose," "Walk," and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too"… and Ice Cream Castle, which included the monster hit "Jungle Love". After three albums Morris Day launched his solo career, releasing three albums: The Color of Success, Daydreaming, and Guaranteed. Most recently, Morris contributed a cover of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" for the Haunted Mansion soundtrack and gave an unforgettable performance in Kevin Smith's hit 2001 film, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, in which Day and the band served as a running plot device and performed a soaring "Jungle Love" finale. In his new album, Day combines classic old school sounds with new music featuring hot new artists. He delivers energetic vocals and witty lyrics, complimented by his trademark smooth as-silk dance moves, all wrapped up in flashy, dapper fashions! The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that Coco Montoya has been booked to perform on the Frontier Stage Thursday, July 22nd at 6:30p & 8:30p. Montoya’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Montoya’s career began in the mid 1970’s when Albert Collins asked him to join his band as drummer. Collins took Montoya under his wing and taught him his “icy hot” guitar style. The two remained friends even after Montoya left Collins’ band. Mentored by legendary bluesman Albert Collins, Coco went on to become the guitarist for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers for ten years before leading his own band. A self taught guitar slinger who plays with an emotional intensity few string benders possess, he plays left-handed and up side down in the style of Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. I Want It All Back, Coco's 7th solo album, was released earlier this year. The disc was produced by Keb' Mo' and Jeff Paris, who also play on the entire album: Keb' on rhythm guitar and Jeff on keyboards. For more information, please go to www.cocomontoya.com. The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce alternative rock band Weezer has been booked for Thursday, July 29, 2010. Tickets for the show will be $30, $35, $45 and $60 and will go on sale Friday, June 18th at 10:00a. Since 1992 the multi-talented group has been entertaining fans across the world, selling more than 8 million albums and performing for countless thousands. Their latest album, Raditude, was released in the fall of last year and has produced the smash “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To”. Raditude caps off a remarkable decade that saw Weezer reassert its position as one of the biggest, best rock bands in the world while also seeing their influence echo through a generation who absorbed the sound and feel of the group’s two classic ‘90s albums: their self-titled 1994 debut, dubbed The Blue Album featuring such era-defining hits as “Undone—The Sweater Song” and “Buddy Holly” and their cult classic 1996 sophomore set Pinkerton. Weezer refused to ride on those past glories when they returned in 2001 with The Green Album, sounding vigorous on the hits “Hash Pipe” and “Island in the Sun.” The hard, heavy Maladroit, featuring “Dope Nose” and “Keep Fishin’,” followed in 2002. Three years later, Weezer released Make Believe in 2005, an album highlighted by “Beverly Hills,” their first single to climb into the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100. The Red Album arrived in 2008 along with the single “Pork and Beans” whose YouTube-satirizing video won Weezer their first Grammy. Tickets can be purchased at the CMSF box office, www.midstatefair.com, 1-800-909-FAIR or any ValliTix outlet. The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. Monster trucks will be coming from near and far to compete in high-flying, car-crushing action, as "young gun" Steve Hill brings his creation, "Monkey'n Around" all the way from Dunnellon, Florida. Hill, at the ripe old age of 21, is already a 5-year veteran of the sport! Also competing out of Hill's stable, "Triple Threat Racing", will be "Outtacontrol", a truly wicked-looking Dodge. Joining them will be two monster trucks known all over the world, the former World Finals Champion "Bounty Hunter", and it’s teammate, the powerful and dominating “Iron Outlaw”, both from the 2Xtreme Racing Team based in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Rounding out the lineup will be 2 defending home-turf trucks, "The Patriot" and "Tropical Thunder", owned by Dan Rodoni and based out of Santa Cruz, California. This means fans will be treated to a show that's truly East Coast vs. West Coast and some in-between! Boasting upwards of 1500 horsepower each, that's over 7500 horses in one show! Included in your ticket is admission to the "Pre-show party", your chance to meet the monster truck drivers, get their autographs, check out their massive rides up close and take all the pictures you like. The "Pre-show party" will be held from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and will also offer rides on the "Alien Attack" monster truck, a truly out-of-this-world experience for kids of all ages. Rides are only $5 and one of the thrilling experiences at this year's Fair that should be on your "to-do" list! The show will be followed with an autograph session as well so you can give your feedback to the drivers and let them know how much you enjoyed the show! Tickets for the show will be $30, $40, $50 and $75 and will go on sale Friday, June 18th at 10:00a. Sammy Hagar is known as "The Red Rocker.” He was the second of three singers for Van Halen, as well as the original singer of the early 1970s rock band Montrose. And in 2007, Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen. He has had the opportunity to work with some of hard rock's most famous guitarists including Eddie Van Halen, Ronnie Montrose, Neal Schon of Journey, and more recently, Joe Satriani. From the Montrose albums that are an essential cornerstone of what became heavy metal, through a solo career that produced “I Can't Drive 55”, an icon of car culture in American music, Sammy Hagar is a vital force. Undeniably his Van Halen years are the summit of hard rock's transition into the mainstream. Now with a new group, Chickenfoot, Sammy has reestablished his roots in a blues based rock band. Special guest will be Trace Adkins. Tickets for the show will be $50, $65, $75 and $100 and will go on sale Friday, April 23rd at 10:00a. How successful was Toby Keith's 2009 America's Toughest Tour? Standing-room-only venues, a frantic reception in Europe and acclaim from all corners aside, and the trek's special guest Trace Adkins was so impressed he has signed on for the next tour, too. Toby Keith, with Adkins, kick-off the American Ride Tour June 19 in Holmdel. Thirty-nine dates are already on the books through late September. Longtime Keith tour sponsor Ford F-Series is back again, too. And who wouldn't want to ride along with Toby? "Cryin' For Me (Wayman's Song)," the second single from Keith's American Ride album, just hit No. 1 on the Music Row chart. It joins the album title track in Toby's vast catalog of chart toppers and is his 28th career No. 1. Universal Records South recently merged with Keith's record label Show Dog to create Show Dog-Universal Music. The label's first new signing was Adkins, who cited his experience on the America's Toughest Tour with Toby as well as the common fan base and vision they share as artists as the inspiration behind his decision to join the label. A new single and album is being planned and will be announced soon. Ranked among the top selling artists in all genres at No. 3 on Billboard's Top 200 Artists of the Decade and one of the top touring artists of the last decade, Toby Keith sold nearly 30 million albums, scored more No. 1 singles than any other country artist and led a steady succession of blockbuster headlining tours. He was named Billboard's No. 1 Country Artist of the Decade and No. 1 Country Songwriter of the Decade. He has also emerged as a multi-faceted entertainment powerhouse with movies, a clothing line and his growing number of I Love This Bar And Grill restaurant-venues. Trace Adkins has achieved unprecedented success as a performer, author and actor. He has enjoyed a remarkable twelve-year career full of chart-topping hits, countless national TV appearances and highly successful tours. In 2008, he was introduced to millions of Americans when he became a finalist on NBC’s debut season of "The Celebrity Apprentice." He starred in some of the show’s best moments and raised more than $500,000 for his charity. With his unmistakable baritone voice, Adkins has sold ten million albums, with more than 27 hits, including chart-toppers, "This Ain't No Thinkin' Thing," "Ladies Love Country Boys," and "You're Gonna Miss This." The night of comedy will take place in the Main Grandstand Arena at 7:30p. Tickets for the show will be $30, $37, $47 and $73 and go on sale Friday, March 12th at 10:00a. Tickets will be available at the California Mid-State Fair box office, on-line at www.midstatefair.com, any Vallitix outlet, or charge by phone at 1-800-909-FAIR. With humor that transcends any and all demographic boundaries, Jeff Dunham is consistently setting and breaking records and conquering every realm he enters. Over the last decade, he and his hilarious troupe of comedic sidekicks have risen from the standup comedy clubs to charm the world and become an unprecedented entertainment phenomenon with an astounding international 360-degree reach. The secret to Dunham's comedic genius and unprecedented success is found in the believably real personalities he has created that are his partners in hilarity: Walter the grumpy retiree; the beer-swilling, NASCAR loving and resolutely redneck Bubba J; the furry and manic Peanut; Jose Jalapeno, the spicy pepper from south of the border; and the bumbling skeletal Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Although Dunham can rightfully be declared one of the funniest humans on the planet, it's his interactions with them as they banter, quip, kid and vie with each other that makes their comedy so distinctive, potent and irresistibly funny. They may have been conceived and crafted by Dunham, but his characters, who are anything but dummies, have now taken on a life of their own and are stars of everything Dunham does. The California Mid-State Fair has a long history of booking top-name comedians with the likes of Larry the Cable Guy, Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Cosby all appearing in year’s past. The WFA made the announcement at its annual convention in Reno, Nevada, January 24-27, 2010. The Merrill Award is the highest honor awarded in the WFA Achievement Award Program and named for the founder of the WFA, Louis Merrill. The award is given to a program or project that “clearly demonstrates innovation, vision and excellence.” “To receive a Merrill Award has been a dream of mine during my tenure as CEO,” stated Vivian Robertson, Fair CEO. “It is true honor for the community and the many individuals who shared the passion and our agriculture educational goal of Mission Square.” The project was a joint effort between the Paso Robles Event Center and the California Mid-State Fair Heritage Foundation, and special recognition should be given to: George Hearst, Jim Saunders - PMD, Don Idler – Idlers, Neil Roberts – Roberts Vineyard Management Services, and Jacky Eshelby – Fair Staff and Cal Poly’s Fair Management Professor for their dedication and generosity to the project. Mission Square originally was awarded for Outstanding Agriculture Programs, and recognized for it’s unique and innovative ability to educate the adult fairgoer on agriculture issues. The California Mid-State Fair embraced the term “localvore” with farmers, olive oil producers, wineries, chefs and sponsors to prepare the largest locally grown celebration the area had ever seen. Designated as the key spot where the Fairgoer could discover the bounty of agriculture on the Central Coast, Mission Square featured a wine bar, an educational vineyard, visual displays and an entertainment venue. The highlight was the Idler’s Demonstration Kitchen, a permanent state of the art culinary experience. With a single goal to help the fairgoer embrace the “buy local” theme and the realization of how much agriculture is actually produced in a 100-mile radius, Mission Square was a unique and sophisticated approach to agriculture education. The Fair encouraged the “Learn By Doing” philosophy of Cal Poly, with Agricultural Business Management students who developed parts of the exhibit thru senior projects and the fair management program, founded by Lou Merrill in the late 1970s. In addition to winning the Merrill Award, the CMSF also brought home first place awards in the following divisions: Competitive Exhibits – Dahlia Show, Facing Challenges – Season Pass Promotion, Fair Logo Contest – “Paso Pete”, Thank You Kerry Donlon, Best New Featured Exhibit – Hee Haw Shootin Gallery. Robertson, who worked under Maynard Potter for 16 years prior to his retirement, said, "Maynard was instrumental in the overall development of the Fair, and most importantly, provided a solid foundation for some of us, like myself, in our careers." Maynard Lee Potter, 70 of Emmett, Idaho passed away on March 19, 2010. He was born in Watsonville, California on May 3, 1939 to Ralph and Margaret Potter. Maynard grew up in Watsonville on his parent’s ranch in Larkin Valley raising tomatoes, hay and sheep. His experiences in the Future Farmers of America influenced much of his life. After graduating from Hartnell College in Business and Animal Husbandry he attended San Jose State. Potter served in the Army and National Guard for 12 years and graduated from Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1962, he entered the real estate business in Watsonville, California. After the market took a downturn, he became more and more interested in raising and showing Registered Suffolk Sheep. It was this that attracted Maynard to the Fair Industry and in 1968 he became manager of the San Luis Obispo County Fair in Paso Robles, California. Under his 25 years of leadership the Fair evolved from a small county fair to one of the biggest, most widely-attended happenings in Central California. Maynard is credited for being the first fair manager to bring named entertainment to a fair. The California Mid-State Fair was lauded as the largest entertainment fair in the nation, attracting acts like Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Lionel Richie, Alabama, Rod Stewart and countless other entertainers at the peaks of their careers. He accomplished this while keeping the fair an affordable, family oriented, Disneyland-type setting that showcased agriculture. Upon retirement in 1993, he and his wife Becky moved to Emmett, Idaho. Maynard pursued his life-long dream of owning and operating a family ranch. Maynard and his family raised Registered Angus and Gelbvieh cattle and show sheep. Potter also served on the NRCS Soil Conservation Board and presided over the Enterprise and Reed Water Irrigation Districts. Maynard is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Becky; four children, Monica Potter, Todd (Georgianna) Potter, Scott (Sherry) Potter, Kevin (Michelle) Potter; his sister Martha (Ed) Burnell and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Kristian Matthew Potter and his parents Ralph and Margaret Potter. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2010 at Potter Funeral Home in Emmett. http://www.midstatefair.com/news_details.php?id=902 http://www.midstatefair.com/news_details.php?id=879 America Confirmed The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that America has been booked to perform one show on the Frontier Stage Wednesday, July 21st at 7:30p. America’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. In 1970, teenagers Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with early partner, Dan Peek) signed a record deal with Warner Bros Records and started an epic career spanning 40 years that is still as fresh and timeless in 2010 as their first days opening for bands such as Pink Floyd and The Everly Brothers in the early 70s. In the midst of their fourth decade of music making, AMERICA continues to evolve while remaining a perennial mainstay on the domestic concert circuit and cornerstones of 70's Top 40 and FM rock radio. In addition to classics such as "A Horse With No Name", "Ventura Highway", "Tin Man", "Lonely People", "You Can Do Magic" and "Sister Golden Hair," AMERICA is revisiting their roots as writers and artists. The 40th Anniversary show will feature songs reflecting some of their song-writing inspirations as well as showcasing their first album, platinum-selling AMERICA, with a very special acoustic set featuring standards such as "I Need You" and "Three Roses" as well as some never-before-performed deep cuts. From anonymous horses to fast-moving trains, AMERICA's extraordinary four-decade musical legacy of consummately crafted pop/rock songs, trademark lush harmonies and evocative lyrical landscapes will never go out of style. The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. This year’s theme is “Endless Summer Fun.” http://www.midstatefair.com/news_details.php?id=879 http://www.midstatefair.com/news_details.php?id=899 CCWC Expands MARCH 2, 2010, PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA - The Central Coast Wine Competition announced today the expansion of the eight year old competition that has continued to grow showcasing some of the finest wines produced on California’s Central Coast. The first major change is the expansion of growing areas eligible to compete. The geographical boundaries will be expanded to include all of the Central Coast AVA and Ventura County. The Central Coast AVA is a large American Viticultural Area that spans from Santa Barbara County in the south to the San Francisco Bay Area in the north. The boundaries of the Central Coast include portions of six counties. With around 100,000 acres planted in wine grapes the AVA is home to several smaller appellations that share the same cooling influence from the Pacific Ocean. The other new key component will be the implementation of combining four events to showcase the winning wineries. The California Mid-State Fair will be partnering with Santa Barbara County Fair, Monterey County Fair and Ventura County Fair to host the Central Coast Wine Competition. In 2003, the California Mid-State Fair presented its first-ever commercial wine competition, the Golden Spur Syrah Challenge, which proved to be a tremendous success with fifty-three wineries submitting over seventy wines for judging. Today the competition has evolved to represent over 600 entries. “We are thrilled to collaborate with these incredible agriculture venues on the Central Coast of California”, noted Vivian Robertson, CEO of the California Mid-State Fair. “The benefits for the wineries will be the increase in marketing exposure and ability to enter one competition instead of four. The fairs will utilize economies of scale, and by combining our resources, be able to host the best competition for our exhibitors.” Entry information will be available after the first of April with the competition taking place in mid June. Blue Öyster Cult’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. For nearly three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Blue Öyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it's one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success. The band is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as Metallica, and BÖC was listed in VH1's countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time. Upon the release of BÖC's self-titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song. BÖC's canon includes three stone-cold classic songs that will waft through the cosmos long after the sun has burned out: The truly haunting "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" from 1976's Agents of Fortune, the pummeling "Godzilla" from 1977's Spectres and the hypnotically melodic "Burnin' for You" from 1981's Fire of Unknown Origin. Other notable BÖC songs include "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll," "Then Came the Last Days of May," "I Love the Night," "In Thee," "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," "Dominance and Submission," "Astronomy," "Black Blade" and "Shooting Shark." A quick listen to their music and you realize the multi-platinum Smash Mouth is a 60s influenced garage band with a keen pop sensibility that maintains a timeless quality, a style they have created and that is all their own. Julianne Hough’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. A triple threat as a singer, actress and dancer, Julianne is already known to millions of fans as the two-time professional dance champion on ABC-TV’s top-rated Dancing with the Stars (DWTS). The show, which pairs professional dancers with music, sports, film and television celebrities, has become a cultural phenomenon and Julianne its top star. Though Julianne has been winning world dance titles since her early teens, her ultimate goal has always been a career in country music. Her newly signed deal with Universal Music Group Nashville (UMGN) is providing her the vehicle to realize that dream. “I’ve always wanted to sing country music,” says the 19 year-old blonde. “I’ve grown up with country music. I love how real everybody is, not just the artists, but the fans.” Julianne Hough’s debut is a compelling collection of songs about the joys and challenges of everyday life delivered by an evocative young voice. It’s the perfect vehicle to carry her from her successful day job to the realization of a dream come true. The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. Chubby Checker’s performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair and coincides with Senior’s Day, where those 62 years old and older get in for only $4.00. You pick up the phone and it's doing the Alexander Graham Bell. Flick on a light and it's doing the Thomas Edison. Ride in your car with its V8 engine and you're doing the Henry Ford. Watch animated cartoons and it's doing the Walt Disney. Like these inspired inventors who are synonymous with their inventions, when you're "dancing apart to the beat," you're doing the Chubby Checker. Fifty-plus years new, touching every segment of our population, we dance apart looking into our partner's eyes – expressing ourselves by rocking, rolling, moving and grooving, shimmying and shaking, doing, in Checker's words, "the dance that we do when we're dancing apart to the beat of anybody's music." History was in the making in November 1959 when the revolutionary concept of "dancing apart to the beat" was premiered to the vast teen-age audience of American Bandstand. Adolescents jumped on the bandwagon; unselfconsciously imitating Checker and his freeform, expressive, dancing-without-a-partner movements that let it all hang out. From November 1959 to October 1963 as Checker's moves begot more moves, his Twist, Pony, Fly and Shake became the most popular form of social dancing. Stealing Angels’ performances will be free with your paid admission to the Fair. Country trio Stealing Angels was formally introduced to country music fans the week of the Nov. 11 CMA Awards on Robin Roberts’ ABC country music television special. Now they hope fans will seek out their music. The trio — Tayla Lynn, Jennifer Wayne and Caroline Cutbirth — is unique because of their families: Lynn is Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter; Wayne is John Wayne’s granddaughter; and Cutbirth is a descendent of Daniel Boone. But Lynn said it isn’t their relatives that set their music apart; it’s their honesty. “It does sound clichéd,” she said. “ But that is something unique about us. We do speak out truth all the time. I’m a recovering alcoholic and a divorcee and I talk about that. Caroline is from the perfect family in Texas, and Jen is John Wayne’s granddaughter and has been living out in California being a tennis pro. Our lives couldn’t be any different but we all come together.” Seriously together. The three live together, eat together, tour in a van together and work out together. “We never have any breaks,” Wayne said. “We have to get along.” According to the three, everyone has a different individual sound. Cutbirth describes herself as pop country, Lynn as Americana and Wayne as “bluegrassy.” The 2010 California Mid-State Fair runs July 21, 2010, through August 1, 2010. The award was received for the new Mission Square and commercial kitchen project, launched during the 2009 Fair. There are a total of fifteen Agriculture Award categories, each divided into five divisions by attendance, that a fair could enter. Mission Square originally was awarded for Special Agricultural Educational Program for the Fairgoing Public, and then was later selected Best of the Division for all agriculture entries. The CMSF competed against many large state fairs, such as, Missouri State Fair, Kansas State Fair, and Oregon State Fair. “We were very excited that Mission Square was selected as the outstanding agriculture program by IAFE,” stated Vivian Robertson, fair CEO. “It is true honor for the community and the many individuals who shared the passion and our agriculture educational goal of Mission Square.” The California Mid-State Fair embraced the term “localvore” with farmers, olive oil producers, wineries, chefs and sponsors to prepare the largest locally grown celebration the area had ever seen. Complete with chef demonstrations, wine flights, music, and competitive exhibits the new area was a hit with the fair going public as well as the media. With a single goal to help the fairgoer embrace the “buy local” theme and the realization of how much agriculture is actually produced in a 100-mile radius, Mission Square was a unique and sophisticated approach to agriculture education. The fair even embraced the “Learn By Doing” philosophy of Cal Poly, have Agricultural Business Management students who developed parts of the exhibit thru senior projects and the fair management classes. The award was presented during the Agricultural Awards Breakfast on December 1, 2009 during the 119th IAFE Convention. “This is the highest honor the California Mid-State Fair has received from the industry,” recalled Robertson, “However, the true praise should go to the many people, companies, and visionaries that made the area the show place it is today.” John Deere, who is an avid supporter of the fair industry around the world, sponsors the IAFE award’s program. The 2010 California Mid-State Fair is schedule to run July 21 – August 1, were we will be celebrating “Endless Summer Fun”.
